Northern Ireland Women's National Team tonight made history by becoming the first women's squad to reach the play-offs of a major tournament after a comprehensive 5-1 victory over the Faroe Islands in Belfast.

Northern Ireland fell behind early on to a shock goal from Jensa Kannuberg Torolvsdottir, but the character of the NI side showed as they hit back instantly with a goal from in form Rachel Furness.
Northern Ireland continued to press and the pressure paid off with Kirsty McGuinness striking a sublime right footed shot passed the Faroes keeper to go into the break 2-1 to the good.
With 55 minutes on the clock Northern Ireland controlled the possession in midfield then Birmingham City Women's midfielder Chloe McCarron ventured forward and let fly from all of 25-30 yards into the top corner of the net to increase the lead.
With Northern Ireland seemingly comfortably manager Kenny Shiels introduced a number of younger players who have broke into the side this year and it was Sion Swifts striker and sister of Kirsty, Caitlin McGuinness to grab the 4th goal.
It was long after when Rachel Furness' tenacity and determination at the back post paid off with a goal bound shot turned into her own goal by the Faroes defender.
Running out comprehensive 5-1 winners this has been nothing more than the girls have deserved from the whole campaign and now look forward to the draw to see who they shall meet in the playoff.
